  • Rootsweb - The oldest genealogical website server, and one of the sponsor's of USGenWeb which is dedicated to keeping genealogy free. Home of many online databases for you to search.

  • LDS's Family Search Site Get a start on records here before going to the resource centers.

  • Ancestry Ancestry is putting new databases online daily, many are free when they first go onsite for a limited time. Subscribe to their newsletter to get the latest uploads daily. Also, you can subscribe to Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter for the latest in genealogy news in general.

  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM) You can look up your ancestors Land Patents (the original land buyer from the government) 1820-1908. You can view the certificates if found and print using your computer. These generally give dates and the place of residence when the land was applied for.
